The investigation by the Metropolitan Police of the Northern Division into the discovery of a baby’s body in a garden not far from the Kaya roundabout in Cité Roche-Bois has led investigators to the trail of a 16 year old girl. The girl, questioned in the presence of her mother on the afternoon of Tuesday 12 April, confessed that she gave birth to the stillborn baby on the morning of Friday 8 April in the toilet at her home before disposing of her baby in the garden of this locality.
The interrogation of the teenager had to be stopped as she was not feeling well. She was taken to the Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port Louis for treatment. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis for treatment. She was subsequently admitted to the ward. Instructions were given by an assistant superintendent of police that she should not be placed under police surveillance.
It was the work of officers from the Field Intelligence Office in this division that put investigators on the trail of this teenager. At around 2pm, a team of police officers arrived at the family’s home. The teenager, accompanied by her mother, was taken to the Roche-Bois police station for questioning.
It was in the late afternoon of Saturday 9 April that the macabre discovery was made. Dr Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, performed an autopsy on the body at the Dr Jeetoo Hospital morgue on the morning of Sunday 10 April. According to him, the baby was stillborn. He could not establish the sex of the baby as the lower limbs were missing from the body.
