Seventy-Year-Old Woman Hit By Drunk Driver, Dies Of Her Injuries

Kiantee Appadu, also known as Rada, 71 years old, who was seriously injured in a road accident in the late afternoon of Tuesday, July 5, succumbed to her injuries early Sunday evening, July 10. This resident of Route Royale, Ernest Florent, Rivière-Sèche had been mowed down by a contract van on the side of this road a few meters from her house. The driver of the vehicle, 43 years old and resident of Caroline, had 149 micrograms of alcohol in his breath. The autopsy performed this Monday morning, July 11, at the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis, attributed the death to a skull fracture.

It was around 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday, July 5 when Kiantee Appadu was seriously injured in an accident on the Royal Road of Ernest Florent in Rivière-Sèche. She was hit by a contract van when she stood on the side of the road. The driver would have lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle, which was travelling in the direction of Beau-Champ, was coming from the direction of Bel Air. She was seriously injured and was evacuated to the Dr. Bruno Cheong Hospital in Flacq in a police vehicle.

After receiving first aid, she was admitted to the neurological ward of the intensive care unit. There was great concern about her condition. The driver of the van was given an alcohol test by an Emergency Response Service officer, which was positive. He had 149 micrograms of alcohol in his breath.

The Carolina resident was arrested and placed in a drunk tank. This Monday morning, he was summoned to the police station for the formalities of his presentation before the court of Flacq. He was brought under a provisional charge of manslaughter. He was later released on bail.

Kiantee Appadu’s funeral was held on the afternoon of Monday, July 11. She was buried at the Two Brothers Cemetery.
