PM Jugnauth Reiterates Government’s Vision To Extend Metro Express Project Across The Island

The extension of the Metro Express project in different regions across the island reflects Government’s vision to enhance the country’s infrastructure and modernise the transport sector. The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, made this statement, yesterday, after having affected a series of site visits in Rose Hill, Ebène and Réduit. He also mentioned about extending the Metro Express to Cote d’or, St Pierre till Flacq and in a near future to the south of the country and to the North.

The aim of his visit was to take stock of the status of works on proposed sites and ensure effective coordination, in view of major construction works for the implementation of Phase 3 of the Metro Express Project, spanning over 3.4 kms from Rose Hill through Ebène to Réduit.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Housing and Land Use Planning, and Minister of Tourism, Mr Steven Obeegadoo; the Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun; the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo; the Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram; the Chief Executive Officer of Metro Express Limited (Mauritius), Dr Das Mootanah; and other personalities were present.

Prime Minister Jugnauth highlighted that the extension of the Metro Express project in this region would necessitate major construction works comprising an elevated platform from Rose-Hill to Ebène SSS, and bridges across Rivière Sèche and Rivière Cascades beside the old railway bridge of 31 meters long.

He indicated that works on different sites have already started and that the extension of the Metro Express project for the route Rose Hill – Ebène – Réduit will be completed in December 2022, which will coincide with the completion of works in Curepipe.

Prime Minister Jugnauth expressed his thanks to the Government of India and to the Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, for their unflinching support in making the Metro Express project a reality for Mauritians. He recalled that the Government of India extended a line of credit of USD 190 million and a grant of USD 10 million to Mauritius. For Pravind Jugnauth, without India nothing would have been possible. On that same note, he said a big thank you to all those working on this project, be it the Ministers involve, the consultants and contractors making this vision a reality.
