Philipe Empeigne, 58 years old, is the 89th victim of road accidents since the beginning of this year. This resident of the city Sir Gaëtan Duval, Grande-Rivière-Nord-Ouest (GRNO) succumbed to his injuries in the late afternoon of Thursday, November 10 after being hit by a truck in the morning of the same day. This fifty-year-old died following a shock due to the crushing of the pelvis and the right thigh.
It is around 11:45 am that this terrible accident occurred on Thursday, November 10. Philipe Empeigne was crossing the Old Pailles Road, GRNO when he was mowed down by a truck coming from the direction of the highway. The victim was crushed under the wheels of the DAF vehicle.
An ambulance of the Emergency Medical Service was requested at this location to evacuate the injured to the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis. After receiving treatment, Philipe Empeigne was admitted to the surgical ward of the intensive care unit. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries around 4:30 pm.
The driver of the vehicle, 51 years old and living in Camp des Embrevâtes, Pamplemousses, was taken to the police station of the Central Barracks to undergo a breathalyzer test. The test was negative. In his statement, he explained that the pedestrian suddenly crossed in front of his truck. He said he did everything he could to avoid the accident. He was arrested on a provisional charge of manslaughter and later released on parole.
The autopsy, performed on Thursday evening, November 10, by Dr. Maxwell Monvoisin, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed the death to a crushing impact to the pelvis and right thigh.
The driver of the truck was brought before the Port-Louis court this Friday morning, November 11, before being released on bail. An investigation was initiated at the police station of the Central Barracks to shed light on the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
