ECOWAS Chooses Nigerian President Bola Tinubu At Its Head

Must Read

Amidst political instability, including military coups and terrorism, in West Africa, the region’s organization Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has decided to make Nigerian President Bola Tinubu its new chairman.

Military coups in West Africa have occurred six times since 2020, signifying a dent in democracy in a region that had been making efforts to end its title of being a “coup belt”.

Bola Tinubu took the presidency of ECOWAS from President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau. The former demanded action to tackle instability, like terrorism and coups in West Africa, describing their impact as “alarming proportion.”

He said, “On peace and security, the threat has reached an alarming level and needs urgent actions in addressing the challenges. In this regard, we must remain committed to the utilisation of all regional frameworks at our disposal to address the menace of insecurity.”

In the 16-member bloc’s meeting, its president vowed to return political stability, peace, security and regional economic integration in the region.
