Must Read

A major development occurred on Monday evening, 22 August. Viraj Beeharry, 27, a drug addict, was taken into custody. The man, who lives in Camp Garreau, Flacq, is suspected of killing his sister and assaulting his father before making the fatal attack look like suicide

The village of Mare La Chaux woke up in shock on Monday morning, August 22. Two bodies were discovered in a house on the Royal Road in this locality. Amrit Dayalsing Beeharry, a 63-year-old taxi driver, killed himself by hanging after slitting the throat of his daughter, Yegeshwaree Beeharry, known as Asha, who was 30 years old. For the time being, this is the assumption made by investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Flacq and the Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT).

It was shortly after 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 22, that a team of police officers from the Belle-Maire Police Station, led by Sub-Inspector Chatoo, went to the Beeharry family home following a request. The body of Amrit Dayalsing Beeharry, who lives in Mare La Chaux, was found hanging from an electric wire, which was attached to an iron bar in his house. His clothes bore traces of blood. Near his body, the police found a knife, which was seized as a piece.

The police found the body of a woman in this house. It was that of Yegeshwaree Beeharry, the daughter of this taxi driver, who lived in this house. She was lying on a bed with a laceration on her neck, and the sheet and a pillow were soaked with blood. Her body was inert. An ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service (SAMU) was called to the scene. The doctor on board was only able to confirm the death of the 30-year-old woman.

Apart from the regular force police, the Flacq CID, led by Superintendent of Police Vikash Babajee, were also present at the scene of the crime before being joined by forensic technicians. The latter collected clues and took fingerprints that could help in the investigation.

Both bodies were taken to the morgue of the Dr A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port Louis for autopsy. Performed by Dr Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, Yogeshwaree Beeharry died as a result of a stab wound to the neck while her father is believed to have died as a result of exsanguination following a laceration to the neck. He is said to have inflicted the wound on himself before hanging himself.

Amrit Beeharry was widowed a year ago and had three children, including a daughter, the victim. The victim’s daughter, who was mentally handicapped, was the only one living with him. On the morning of Monday 22 August, one of his two sons was driving his car as he regularly does. This man was questioned by investigators to clarify certain points.

Under the supervision of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Premanand Purmessur, the divisional commander, the investigation will shed light on the exact circumstances of these two deaths.

The funeral of Amrit Beeharry and his daughter Yegeshwaree is scheduled for this Tuesday morning, 23 August.
