An 8-year-old boy was found under a bed in a prayer room by a resident of Morcellement Saint André on the afternoon of Sunday August 20. Questioned about his presence in her home, the child said he had come to steal some clothes. She later discovered that a sum of Rs 23,000, a chain, two bracelets and four rings belonging to her and her husband had been stolen. She suspects that this child is the perpetrator of the theft. The value of the stolen goods is estimated at Rs 350,000. The boy denied the charges.
In the late afternoon of Sunday August 20, the 39-year-old woman, who works as a manager, went to the Plaine des Papayes police station to report the theft. On the same day, at around 12:30 p.m., she claims to have surprised her 8-year-old neighbor under a bed in his prayer room. When questioned about his presence in her house, the little boy said he had come to steal some clothes. As soon as he left, the woman in her thirties realized that the gold jewelry and the sum of Rs 23,000 that had been in a cupboard in the room were no longer there.
The boy was questioned by police officers from the Plaine des Papayes police station in the presence of one of his relatives. He denied stealing any jewelry or money. A search of his home turned up nothing. Police are continuing to investigate the case.
