Must Read

An 84-year-old man, resident of Solitude, Triolet, did not survive his injuries. The octogenarian was crossing in the back of a van that was reversing on Emmanuel Anquetil Street in Port-Louis, when he was hit by this vehicle on Tuesday, February 28. Seriously injured, he was transported to the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis. Unfortunately, he died in the evening. The autopsy performed by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, attributed his death to multiple injuries.

In a statement made at the police station of Trou-Fanfaron, the driver of the van explained the circumstances of this accident. On Tuesday, February 28, around 2:30 p.m., he was driving his Mitsubishi van along Emmanuel Anquetil Street, Port-Louis coming from La Citadelle to Farquhar Street.

At some point, he slowed his vehicle after spotting an empty space to park his van on the left side of that street. As he backed up, he heard members of the public yelling. He stopped and got out of his vehicle, at which point he saw a man lying on the road beside his van. The injured man was later transported to Dr. Jeetoo Hospital in an ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service. After receiving treatment, he was admitted to the ward.

At around 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, the octogenarian breathed his last. This Wednesday morning, March 01, his body was autopsied at the morgue of this hospital by Dr. Chamane, and his death was attributed to multiple injuries.

The driver of the van, 33 years old and living on Wellington Street, Port-Louis, was submitted to an alcohol test, which was negative. On March 01, he was brought before the Port-Louis court where he was charged with a provisional manslaughter charge. He was later released on bail.
