Two French Youths Arrested For Importing Rs 20 Million Worth Of Hashish

Two French nationals, Tamrat Laurent Anthony Brodel, a 19-year-old student, and Sheineze De Souza Alves, a 21-year-old secretary, will appear before the Bail and Remand Court (BRC) in Port-Louis this Saturday, November 5, on a provisional charge of drug importation. They were arrested at Plaisance airport on Tuesday, November 2, coming from Paris with 4.72 kilos of hashish. The market value of this drug is Rs 20 360 000.

These two young lovers were on their first visit to Mauritius, and were to stay in a hotel in Balaclava for eight days. It is by the Corsair flight SS 632 coming from Orly airport, Paris that they disembarked at the airport of Plaisance around 11:22 am on Tuesday, November 2nd.

A check made in the luggage of these two Frenchmen made it possible to discover in the interior lining of that of Anthony Brodel 5 aluminium packages, containing hashish. This young man was to celebrate his 20th birthday on December 6th.

On the same day, an operation of ‘controlled delivery’ was set up under the supervision of the police superintendent, Jacques Jean Pierre, but this was lifted at 10 am on Friday, November 4, because the local contact did not show up.

Two cell phones belonging to these two French citizens were seized for the purpose of the investigation. On Saturday, November 5, they were brought before the Bail and Remand Court in Port-Louis where they are facing a provisional charge of drug importation. On Monday, November 7, they will be presented before the court in Mahebourg.

The French Embassy in Mauritius has been informed of the arrest of these two persons.
