Must Read

Four Mauritian athletes who competed in the Tokyo Paralympic Games this year, received cheques during a ceremony held today, in Port-Louis, from the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mrs Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo. The aim was to honour and recognise the accomplishments of these sportspersons with disabilities at the Games. Each para-athlete received a cheque of Rs 10,000.

The Republic of Mauritius was represented by four para-athletes namely Noémi Alphonse, Anaïs Angeline, Brandy Perrine and Eddy Capdor, who all competed in athletics. Noémi Alphonse distinguished herself by reaching four finals and in the process cinched four African records in the 100m, 400m, 800m and 1500m T54.

In her address, the Minister warmly congratulated the sportspersons for their performance which is due to hard work, discipline and tenacity. She expressed gratitude to the para-athletes for making the country proud, and highlighted that the society needs such individuals who are an inspiration and role models for others.

Mauritius, she recalled, is party to several conventions which pertain to ensuring the inclusion and protection of the rights of people with disabilities. She thus assured the para-athletes of Government’s continuous support and resolve to create an inclusive society for all.

According to her, it is important to always lay emphasis on what people with disabilities can achieve as they are truly endowed with a lot of determination, rigour and discipline, and only require the right opportunities to work wonders. Government has introduced several initiatives to enhance the quality of life of the disabled and there remains a lot which can be done on the long-run, she indicated.

The Minister also expressed appreciation to all stakeholders who have extended their support in the preparation process of the para-athletes leading to the Games and lauded the dedicated teamwork. For her, it requires the collaboration of the civil society, NGOs, the private sector, the authorities, the community and the family cell to enhance the quality of lives of people with disabilities.

The Tokyo Paralympic Games were held from 24 August – 05 September 2021. A total of 22 sports competitions were scheduled with Badminton and Taekwondo making their debut at the Games.

Through flawless preparation and execution, the Tokyo 2020 Games had as objective to deliver an event where every athlete could realise their best performance and achieve their personal best.
