The Provisional Charge Against Bruneau Laurette Struck Out

Must Read

For the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, this provisional case lodged by the police against Bruneau Laurette for a bounced cheque amounts to “an abuse of the process of the court”. So the DPP stepped in today to stop the prosecution against Bruneau Laurette.

On 16 September 2020, the director of a car rental company filed a complaint against Bruneau Laurette. He stated that the activist has rented a car for a long time in 2019. On 8 July 2020, Bruneau Laurette gave him a cheque of Rs 8,000. Two days later, his bank informed him that it was bounced. This explains the complaint before the police.

But in the meantime, Bruneau Laurette paid the director of the car the sum due. The director notified the police.

“When you are on the right track you don’t fear anyone, not even the Prime Minister,” Bruneau Laurette told the press as he left court. He stressed that since his peaceful march of 29 August 2020, he had to face many reprisals. He thanked the judiciary for its independence.

Sanjeev Teeluckdharry, lawyer of Bruneau Laurette, also stressed on the fact that the police is being used to persecute opponents of the Government. He added that since his client criticized two Ministers, he became a target of the government. He added that this case is politically motivated. He also praised the independence of the DPP.
