Safe Case: DPP Challenges Navin Ramgoolam’s Acquittal

Must Read

The appeal by the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) challenging the the acquittal of former Prime minister, Navin Ramgoolam has been heard in Court today, Monday 26 July 2021. The DPP is contesting the judgment delivered on 15 November 2019 by the Intermediate Court dismissing the 23 counts of “limitation of payment in cash” against the former PM.

To recall, Navin Ramgoolam had been arrested after having lost the elections in 2014. The sum of Rs 220 million was found in his safe deposit box at his residence in River Walk, Vacoas.

The appeal of the DPP was heard today before Justice Igbal Maghooa and Renuka Dabee. The counsel for the DPP, Mr Rashid Ahmine stated that the Intermediate Court was wrong to dismiss the charges against Navin Ramgoolam since the identity of the one who gave this money to the leader of the Labour Party has not yet been found and it was a material fact to be proven. In addition, Mr. Ahmine stated that there was the possibility of bringing forth circumstantial evidence for the conviction of the former PM.

The submission of all parties has been scheduled on September 15, 2021.
