National Assembly: This Friday’s Sitting Was The Last Of 2022

There will be no parliamentary sitting on Tuesday 13 December. Neither the Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, nor the Speaker of the National Assembly, Sooroojdev Phokeer, nor the Leader of the Opposition, Xavier-Luc Duval, are present for this probable last parliamentary session of the year. The Prime Minister is leaving the country to attend the U.S.-Africa Summit in Washington, D.C. from December 13-15 and the leader of the opposition, Xavier-Luc Duval is unwell and has not addressed a Private Notice Question. As for Sooroojdev Phokeer is attending the 52nd Plenary Session of the SADC Parliamentary Forum in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Steven Obeegadoo announced at the end of this Friday’s sitting that this is the last sitting of the year. He confirmed that Parliament has met 32 times this year. He explained that 19 bills were presented and 18 adopted. In addition to this, 2 bills, introduced last year, were also passed. Steven Obeegadoo indicated that 629 questions were answered, 609 of which required an oral response. Government also responded to 20 Private Notice Questions. He also indicated that there were 2 sittings dedicated to private motions.

The House was adjourned to Tuesday 28th March 2023.
