Mauritius 49th On The Corruption Perceptions Index Of Transparency International

Must Read

Mauritius is now below the 50 least corrupt countries in the world. At the level of Africa, Mauritius is 4th with an index of 54. The country does better than Rwanda. It should be noted that the Seychelles occupy the first place in sub-Saharan Africa with an index of 70.

The Corruption Perceptions Index brings together data from different sources that reflect the perceptions of business leaders and national experts on the level of corruption in the public sector. The CPI therefore does not take into account the popular perception of corruption at the national level.

In general terms, it is observed that corruption has been increasing worldwide and that the top countries are not exempt. Among the three countries that share the top spot are Denmark, Finland and New Zealand. It will be recalled that a Danish company was named in the alleged corruption case known as the St Louis case.

On the African front, Seychelles is far ahead of Cape Verde (58), Botswana (55) and Mauritius (54). After Mauritius are Rwanda (53) and Namibia (49). In a press release, Transparency Mauritius points out that “accusations of the use of institutions for political purposes, nepotism and alleged cases of conflict of interest or influence peddling rain down almost every week. One of the bulwarks of probity in Mauritius, the office of the Electoral Commissioner, is currently under the spotlight. It is time for firm action to be taken.
