An investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Trou aux Biches concerning a burglary perpetrated at the home of a 50-year-old man in Triolet led to the arrest of the man’s son on Monday April 11. The suspect, who is a drug addict, had taken various items on Monday, March 28, which he placed in a van belonging to his father before fleeing. The amount of the loot is estimated at Rs 589 000. The 25-year-old son, a former student of the University of Mauritius, was brought before the Pamplemousses court on Tuesday morning, April 12.
It was in the evening of March 28 that this 58-year-old man had gone to the police station of Triolet to report this case of theft at his home. In his complaint, he related that this crime had been committed between 1 and 4 pm that day. He told the police that he suspects his son to be the author of this theft, because the latter was alone at home at the time of this theft. His van, the horsepower of this vehicle, a 42-inch television set, an electronic scale, a metal box containing a sum of Rs 15,000 in different denominations and coins, gold jewelry, two passports, one of which belonged to his wife, his original driver’s license and a spare key of his van had been stolen.
During the day of Monday, April 11, based on certain information, a team of officers from the Trou aux Biches CID, led by Inspector Seegoolam and Constables Sookha, Céline and Calcutteeah, proceeded to arrest this man’s son at a plantation in Triolet in this stolen vehicle. He was questioned closely and eventually confessed to the theft. He returned the van, the two passports and the driver’s license of his father to the police. The value of the recovered items is Rs 100,000. This is the second time he has stolen his father’s van. It had been found in a plantation of “bringelles”.
