There are 156 asymptomatic and 4 serious cases admitted to ENT Hospital in Vacoas. The proportion of infected people remains unchanged since yesterday, i.e. 1.04% of the population. On the other hand, the ENT Hospital deplores a death announced on Wednesday evening. Other worries are plaguing the country.
8 babies and 7 staff
The concern of the day is around the 8 positive babies who are tested positive to Covid. The cases have been identified since last Friday. They are between 7 and three years old and come from the Shelter Oiseau du Paradis in Cap Malheureux. Two of them, a 7 month old and a one and a half year old have been under observation at the SSRN Hospital since the detection last week. The other six are in isolation in the same ‘Shelter’ and are being monitored. The contact tracing exercise has found 7 staff members infected and also in self-isolation. However, it is our understanding that since these areas are restricted areas, and therefore access is restricted even to parents, the children must have been infected by staff members. A medical team has been dispatched to the shelter and reports that the situation is under control. However, the extent of the transmission is unknown.
Sir Veerasamy Ringadoo GS closed on Wednesday
This popular primary school in Sodnac had to close its doors on Wednesday for disinfection. The positive case was found in a teacher. She is an oriental language teacher. The school resumed on Monday and this is the third rotation of pupils. As she is an oriental language teacher only, it would be her who moved from class to class for lessons.
A case at the RYC
The case was identified in one of the three residents of the Rehabilitation Youth Centre in Beau-Bassin. The boy is in segregation within the correctional centre. Staff were subjected to a rapid test during the day on Wednesday
DPM Steven Obeegadoo : Reopening is a must
Mauritius is in the red according to the CDC and is even strongly advised against being visited. But according to DPM Steven Obeegadoo the full reopening of the borders in October is not a choice but an obligation. The reason is that the government is no longer able to finance the economy and therefore the reopening is synonymous with economic recovery at all levels. The reopening of the borders was made possible by the successful vaccination campaign involving two-thirds of the adult population, vaccinated with at least one dose.
