Couple Arrested For Growing Rs 3.9 Million Worth Of Cannabis

The men of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Plaine-Magnien, with the help of their colleagues of the CID of Mahébourg and Grand Bois, carried out a major bust on Wednesday November 9. They uprooted six hundred and seven cannabis plants, seized a quantity of the same drug and seeds on an abandoned lot in Camp Carol, Kenya, Le Bouchon. In the wake of this discovery Rajesh Jhugur, a 48 year old ploughman and his wife Devina Jhugur, née Nakir, 42 years old were arrested. The seizure made is estimated at Rs 3 900 000.

It is following information obtained on a plantation of cannabis plants that the men of the CID of Plaine-Magnien mounted an operation in Camp Carol Kenya, Plaine-Magnien during the day of Wednesday, November 9. This team was supported by their colleagues from the CID of Mahébourg and those of Grand-Bois. Police officers from the Emergency Response Service and the Divisional Supporting Unit of the division also came to assist in this operation under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Mahendradeosingh Surnam and Assistant Superintendent of Police Satiajev Calluchurn, who are in charge of the CID of the southern division.

Cannabis Plants

These officers discovered several cannabis plants in pots. This place was then secured and placed under surveillance. It is thus that around 1:05 pm this Wednesday November 9, Rajesh Jhugun who lives at about twenty meters of this place was surprised to handle a certain quantity of cannabis. By seeing the arrival of a policeman, this suspect had to take his legs to his neck. This policeman had to seize two black plastic pots and a red container containing cannabis.

Another police officer in turn uprooted six hundred and seven cannabis plants measuring between five centimeters and one meter and a half. A plastic pot containing cannabis seeds was also seized. An electronic scale, a black and grey t-shirt, four iron pipes and several pots were seized as evidence. These will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Reduit for analysis. Fingerprints and DNA samples will also be taken from the exhibits.

Cannabis Plants

The Jhugun couple who were arrested in the wake of this discovery have claimed their right to be heard. The couple has asserted their right to silence. Rajesh Jhugun was placed in custody at the police station of Rose-Belle. His wife was placed in a cell at the police station of Bel Ombre. This Thursday morning, November 10, they were brought before the court of Mahébourg. They were charged with a provisional accusation of drug trafficking. They were taken back into custody.
