Avinash Teeluck Recalled The Contribution Of Max Boullé In The Construction Of Several Well-Known Buildings

The Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, and Acting Minister of Tourism, Mr Avinash Teeluck, inaugurated, on Saturday, the ‘La Rétrospective Max Boullé 2021. The Minister also recalled that late Mr Max Boullé has greatly contributed, as an architect, to the conception and construction of several well-known buildings around the country such as the chapel at Cap Malheureux, the St Joseph College, and the Marie Reine de la Paix monument.

Entre lignes et lumière’ exhibition at the Caudan Arts Centre, in Port Louis. The exhibition is being held at The Basement, a new exhibition site at the Caudan Arts Centre, from 02 October to 02 November 2021. Several eminent personalities were also present at the event.

This project of the Les Amis de Max Boullé Association has been partly funded by the National Arts Fund, which operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage. Activities organised in parallel with the exhibition of some 60 art works of late Mr Max Boullé comprise the publication of a book entitled ‘Max Boullé, architecte et peintre / Entre lignes et lumière’; a scenography; and workshops both for adults and children.

In his address, Minister Teeluck highlighted that this project has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of Government, the private sector, and Les Amis de Max Boullé Association. He stressed that the private sector is a key partner in the social and economic development of the country and expressed satisfaction that the private sector has a particular interest in the field of arts and culture.

Speaking about the National Arts Fund, Minister Teeluck recalled that it had been established in February 2018 and aims to support and accompany local artists and creators by funding artistic projects, initiatives and events such as concerts and exhibitions, among others. He underlined that, for this year, the National Arts Fund launched the Post-COVID Call, where 22 projects were approved to the tune of some Rs 10 million, including the present exhibition. Since 2018, 85 projects have received a grant from the National Arts Fund amounting to some Rs 38 million, he said.

Furthermore, Minister Teeluck underscored that, since Government is committed to promote arts and culture, it has recently set up a Committee bringing together the Ministry of Arts and Cultural Heritage, the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, and private sector actors in a bid to identify a strategy for the safeguard, rehabilitation, and enhancement of our heritage classified sites. ‘Working sessions are underway and I am convinced that this committee will enable us to revitalise the cultural heritage sector’, he added.
