Alleged Trafficking Of Psychotropic Drugs: A Pharmacy Owner Before The Court

Lalldhun Bissoonauth, 68 years old pharmacy owner was brought before the court of Pamplemousses this Friday, September 24, under a provisional accusation of conspiracy. This resident of Plaine des Papayes and his nephew Dr. Nishith Bissoonauth were arrested on Saturday, September 18, in the context of an investigation into alleged trafficking of psychotropic tablets at the northern hospital. Both of them, who complained of not feeling well, were admitted to the North Clinic on the same day. Lalldhun Bissoonauth was discharged during the day on Friday 24 September. He was released on parole after paying a bail of Rs 10,000 and an IOU of Rs 40,000.

This case of alleged trafficking of psychotropic drugs came to light after a team from the Field Intelligence Office of the northern division arrived at the northern hospital on the afternoon of Tuesday September. This on the basis of certain information and after hours of surveillance Dr. Dhivish Raj Sharma Soobhug, 30 years was apprehended in the compound of this hospital. He had in his possession sixty tablets of Pragabalin 150 mg, classified as dangerous drug and twenty eight blank prescriptions. Dr. Dhivish Soobhug was to incriminate his work colleague, Dr. Nishith Bissoonauth, of being involved in trafficking of psychotropic drugs. They were issuing prescriptions for psychotropic drugs with fictitious names at the request of his colleague’s uncle, who owns the pharmacies.

Dr. Nishith Bissoonauth and his uncle Lalldhun Bissoonauth were arrested on September 18. However, they were not taken into police custody. For medical reasons, they were admitted to a clinic and placed under police surveillance. Nishith Bissoonauth is still in the clinic.

The investigation that is currently being conducted in this case by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Northern Division is on the way to confirm the existence of trafficking in psychotropic drugs. This after a raid in one of the pharmacies in question on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 22, led to the discovery of a large quantity of prescriptions issued by the two doctors at the northern hospital.
