Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani In UAE

Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani has taken refuge in the United Arab Emirates, the Gulf nation confirmed.

Over the weekend, Mr Ghani fled Afghanistan since the Taliban started to overrun the capital, Kabul. The UAE’s foreign ministry said the country had welcomed Mr Ghani and his family on humanitarian grounds. In Wednesday, Mr Ghani addressed through a video that he left Afghanistan in order to avoid bloodshed and prevent what he described as a “huge disaster.” He also added that the rumours stating that he travelled to the UAE with large amounts of money with him “completely baseless and lies.”

On Monday, US President Joe Biden criticised the Afghanistan’s government for fleeing. However the president still refer to ‘President Ghani’s stating that there have been no formal handover of power. Mr Ghani entered the office in 2014 and was re-elected in February 2020. He also declared that there is no need to fear a Taliban military victory. He stated, “This is not Vietnam. The government is not collapsing.”
