AEGLE Cancer Hospital: 35 Patients Treated With High-Precision Radiotherapy Since May 2023

Must Read

Since its inauguration in May 2023, the 4D radiotherapy unit at AEGLE Cancer Hospital has treated 35 patients, 20 of whom are already in remission. The patients, aged between 25 and 89, have benefited from high-precision radiotherapy. Indeed, the cancer hospital, located in the Rose-Belle Business Park, is the only medical facility in Mauritius and the region to be equipped with the Elekta Versa HD (with 4D Image Guidance). Thanks to this cutting-edge technology, equipped with artificial intelligence, several types of cancer can be treated faster and more effectively. To date, this innovative equipment has been used to treat cancers of the prostate, breast, esophagus, rectum, uterus, cervix, biliary tract, head and neck, as well as lymphoma and soft-tissue sarcoma.

“High-precision radiotherapy is a ‘game changer’ in cancer treatment. Since its commissioning, our unit has successfully treated 20 patients, including some foreign nationals. Many have chosen this ultra-precise radiotherapy because it shortens treatment times compared with conventional radiotherapy. Daily sessions often last less than 10 minutes. Thanks to this cutting-edge technology, we are able to deliver high doses of radiation to the tumor while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. In addition to improving efficacy, this high level of precision considerably minimizes the side effects usually associated with this type of treatment. As a result, most patients can carry on with their daily activities as normal,” explains Dr Jayant Bhargav, radiation oncologist at AEGLE Cancer Hospital.

Marie Wendy Christelle Netta was the first patient to be treated in the new 4D radiotherapy unit. “I’m really satisfied because everything went well for me. The staff were attentive and gave me the help and support I needed. They put me at ease and reassured me throughout the treatment,” she explains.

“The staff have a very human approach and show genuine dedication to patients. I’d like to thank Dr. Bhargav, who is the link between the patient and the X-ray technician. I would also like to emphasize the healthy environment offered by the medical establishment to all those undergoing treatment of this kind. I hope that the AEGLE Cancer Hospital will continue to improve its services for the benefit of all cancer patients”, adds Mansingh Seeboruth, who completed his treatment in June.

The Elekta Versa HD enables medical staff to design the most appropriate treatment for each patient. High-precision radiotherapy is also used for palliative care patients. The treatment helps reduce pain, thus improving their quality of life. Depending on the type, location and stage of the cancer, radiotherapy sessions are generally combined with other treatments, such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and surgery. All these treatments are available at AEGLE Cancer Hospital.
