From January to mid-August, 36 people lost their lives on two wheels. There were 29 riders and 7 passengers.

Just this Tuesday, August 15, a fatal accident involving two motorcycles in Petite Pointe aux Piments joined the list. They collided at around 10 p.m., with the two motorcyclists, aged 25 and 40 respectively, losing their lives.

On Saturday morning in Plaine Magnien, a 42-year-old cyclist died after being hit by a 4 x4. The victim was thrown to the asphalt by the violence of the impact.

Another high-profile accident was at La Salette, Grand Baie, where Walid Mungur and his friend Fahad, both aged 17, died instantly…

According to experts, two-wheelers remain the most vulnerable group.  In 2021, 64 motorcyclists or their passengers lost their lives in accidents. In 2022, over 40% of victims were on two-wheelers.

After motorists, pedestrians are the hardest hit by road accidents, with 34 fatalities to date. A total of 98 people have died in road accidents since the beginning of 2023.

A situation that is alarming the authorities. The Prime Minister chaired a meeting of the National Road Safety Commission on August 04, announcing a national awareness and prevention campaign. Pravind Jugnauth declared that “two-wheelers have been involved in 36% of fatal accidents” since January.
