An accident of rare violence occurred in the late afternoon of Thursday, April 7 on the Royal Road in Pont Colville, New France. A Ford 4 x 4 driving towards La Flora mowed down a pedestrian on the sidewalk. This after tearing off a parapet and a traffic light post. The victim, Chireeraz Cookmar Mahabir, 65, also known as Vikram Mahabir was killed instantly. The driver of the 4 x 4, Ayatoollah Said Irfan Cheddy, 33 years old bailiff at the intermediate court was arrested. He was subjected to a breathalyzer test which was negative. According to his version, he fell asleep at the wheel.
It was around 4:14 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, that this resident was involved in an accident on Route Royale in New France. Irfan Cheddy’s 4 x 4 was driving towards La Flora. This intermediate court bailiff lives in Souillac. At some point, his vehicle left the road and went up the sidewalk on the left side of the road. On his way, he tore off a parapet, a traffic light post and hit Chireeraz Mahabir, who was standing there. The sixty-year-old who lived a few meters from the accident site did not survive his injuries.
An investigation was initiated at the level of the police station of New France to shed light on the exact circumstances of this accident. After spending a night in a police cell, Irfan Cheddy will be brought before the Souillac court this Friday, April 8. A provisional charge of manslaughter has been lodged against him.
The body of this 60 year old man was then transported to the morgue of the Victoria Hospital in Candos for an autopsy. The autopsy was performed by Dr. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, head of the forensic department of the police on Thursday evening, April 7, attributed the death to multiple injuries.
Chireeraz Mahabir’s funeral will be held this Friday, April 8 at 12:30 pm. He will be cremated in Bigara.
