A grade 6 schoolgirl aged 12 was caught stealing from the Super U hypermarket in Flacq on the afternoon of Wednesday 11 October. After going through the checkout without paying the bill, she was arrested. A search of her bag revealed forty-four pens, two sketch pads and a bag of gummed sweets. The total value of the items was Rs 2,160. The girl also confessed to having committed two other thefts on 28 August and 14 September respectively from the same location. The items stolen in these two cases are estimated to be worth Rs 1,300.
An employee caught the young girl shoplifting these items on Wednesday on CCTV footage from the hypermarket’s control room. She immediately informed her manager. The girl, who crossed the counter without paying the bill, was stopped by a security guard stationed there.
Pens, sketch pads and a bag of sweets were found in her possession. The value of these items was Rs 2,160.
She gave her statement in the presence of her father, who is a skipper. She was subsequently allowed to leave. On Thursday 12 October she was summoned to Flacq police station for investigation.
