Victoria Urban Terminal: 70% Of Work Completed

The Prime Minister, Mr Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, took stock of the status of the project for the redevelopment, modernisation and operation of the Victoria Urban Terminal (VUT), this afternoon, in Port Louis. The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Louis Steven Obeegadoo and the Vice-Prime Minister, Dr. Mohammad Anwar Husnoo, along with the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, the Minister of National Infrastructure and Community Development, Mr Mahendranuth Sharma Hurreeram were also present.

The Director of the Traffic Management and Road safety Unit, Mr D. Nathoo provided an overview of the forthcoming traffic diversions regarding the Metro Express Project. The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Victoria Station Ltd, Mr Charles Derblay explained about the VUT through a guided tour. The VUT is being implemented by the Victoria Station Ltd, under the supervision of the Ministry of National Infrastructure and Community Development.

Speaking on the facilities and amenities of the terminal, Prime Minister Jugnauth indicated that it will comprise amongst others, food courts, shops, offices and a dedicated hawker area. He recalled Government’s engagement towards providing a secured space to accommodate hawkers and highlighted that the hawkers stands will be the first to be operational in the terminal.

The Prime Minister pointed out that in the future there will a terminal at Immigration Square in Port Louis adding that procedures have already been initiated for an urban terminal at Quatre Bornes, Vacoas, Curepipe and Rose Hill. The concept of terminal will not only be limited to urban areas but development projects will also be undertaken in rural regions with potential bus stations that may be further developed, he underscored.
