Rs 8 Million Worth Of Heroin Found In Ugandan Man’s Sandals

Must Read

A Controlled Delivery operation put in place since Sunday 21 August after a Ugandan national was found in possession of 536.11 grams of heroin on arrival in Mauritius was cancelled on Friday 26 August. This is because no one contacted him to take delivery of the drug, estimated at Rs 8,041,650. The drug was hidden in the soles of the sandals of Yusuf Kayiwa Sseluyange, a 36-year-old driver.

The Ugandan national arrived in Mauritius on 21 August at 6.25pm on Kenya Airways flight KQ 270. A thorough search of his person by officers of the Custom Anti-Narcotics Section (Cans) and the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) at the airport found two transparent plastics in the soles of his sandals. These contained a quantity of drugs.

Yusuf Sselunyange, who was to stay in a flat in Grand Bay for a week, was on his first visit to Mauritius. He was due to fly back on Sunday 28 August. A mobile phone found in his possession was seized for investigation.

After the exercise of controlled delivery was lifted on Friday, the suspect was detained in a cell at the Eel River Police Station. This Saturday morning, August 27, he was brought before the Bail and Remand Court in Port Louis. He is facing a provisional charge of drug importation. The alleged smuggler will be brought before the Mahébourg court again on Monday 29 August.
