Restrictions On Fruits, Vegetables And Flowers Imported From South Africa

Must Read

The Ministry of Agribusiness and Safety has decided to impose new restrictions on fruits, vegetables and flowers imported from South Africa because of Omicron variant. All fruits and vegetables imported from South Africa must be pre-packaged and quarantined at the airport for 48 hours.

All imported shipments must be taken directly to the Agriculture Marketing Board’s cold storage facility at the Plaisance airport. The shipments will be isolated for a period of time. There is no charge to the importers for this operation. The National Plant Protection Office (NPPO) will have the authority to grant authorizations to importers to take delivery of their shipments once the 48-hour quarantine period at Plaisance Airport has passed.

The Ministry of Agro-business has decided to go ahead with this new measure to prevent the variant B.1.1.529 from entering the country by air. It should be noted that South Africa exports several commodities to Mauritius. Some time ago, the AMB imported 31 tons of carrots, 20 tons of beans and 5 tons of cauliflower from South Africa. It should be noted that Mauritius imports on average 7.8% of consumer products from South Africa.
