Police Officer Suspected Of Stealing Rs 50,000 From A Motorist On Saturday In Quatre-Bornes

A 38-year-old care worker living in Rivière du Rempart alleges that he was robbed on Friday, October 8, on the St Jean Road, Quatre-Bornes by a person who presented himself as a member of the CID.

In his complaint, the victim explains that he had gone to his friends’ home in Vacoas on the evening of Friday, October 8 to attend a funeral.

Thereafter, he took the road leading to St. Jean in order to reach the highway around 21 hours. But when he arrived at the market of Quatre-Bornes and with the road works and the detour he could not find his way back.

Feeling lost, he stopped his vehicle in the vicinity of the St Jean Road. He approached a woman to try to ask her for directions.

But a car stopped at his height. One of the occupants, who introduced himself as an officer of the CID, used harsh words against him. He asked him to stop his vehicle in a rude and discourteous manner.  Three other occupants of the car also got out.  One of these people then grabbed a bag that was on the passenger seat of the victim’s canopy.

The bag, according to the victim contained his Mauritian passport and a sum of Rs50,000 and they left.

The victim immediately made a statement at the police station in Quatre-Bornes.

A few minutes later a patrol checked four men who were in a car still in Quatre-Bornes.

During a search of the car, the loot was recovered. And four men were arrested. The man was a 22-year-old police officer assigned to the SMF. His blood alcohol level was above the legal limit, a 33-year-old Mauritius Telecom technician, a 33-year-old insurance agent and a 32-year-old carpenter.

The insurance agent and the police officer are still being held for investigation while the other two have been allowed to return home. The investigation is ongoing.
