The Orchidée Centre, a Drug treatment and rehabilitation Centre, was inaugurated on Saturday morning by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, at the Brown Sequard Mental Health Care Hospital (BSMHCH) in Beau-Bassin. The Parliamentary Private Secretary, Dr (Mrs) Marie Christiane Dorine Chukowry, and other personalities, were present on the occasion.
In a statement, the Health Minister highlighted that this new facility has been opened so as to provide residential detoxification, rehabilitation, inpatient, outpatient and day care services to female patients as well as after care services to prevent any relapse. It is a first of its kind for the rehabilitation of female drug addicts, he indicated.
Furthermore, Dr Jagutpal underlined that the 2022 International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed on 26 June and, in this context, the Ministry is working with the objective to provide additional care and support to drug addicts. “The Nénuphar Centre in Montagne Longue is already offering treatment services to young people and, last year, a similar Centre was inaugurated for males at the BSMHCH,” he pointed out.
Minister Jagutpal indicated that the Orchidée Centre can provide treatment to some 20 patients at a time, including inpatients and outpatients. “The Centre has many facilities such as good support services from the staff and offers many different recreational activities,” he stated.
This facility, the Health Minister stressed, will help these victims to get rid of their addiction and reconstruct a healthy life and empower them in their social integration. On this score, Dr Jagutpal lauded the efforts of the team responsible for the setting up of the Orchidée Centre and in making this space inviting and safe so that the patients can avail from the necessary assistance to move on and reconstruct their lives.
