It is with great sadness that we have learnt that Dr. Chiragra Chakraborty has passed away.
A regular contributor of Le Matinal, he will always be a man of great culture and intellect for us. Dr. Chakrabarty was of this rare breed of charismatic gentlemen with the godsend gift of immediate inspiration, calmness and trust to all those who have been fortunate to know him.

With a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics, and Holder of a MA (Econometrics & Mathematical Economics), Dr. Chakrabarty was a dynamic professional of many years of experience, especially concerning the development of financial markets of the country.
His international experience has led him to be a Financial Market Experts at International Monetary Fund (IMF) (Advisory Role). He has also worked as the Director of Bank of Mauritius (Development and supervision of Financial Markets) and has been a consultant to the governor of the BOM on project management.
He has also been a Member of the Reserve Bank of India Committee to set up NDS (Technology platform for trading Bonds).
Dr. Chakrabarty has assisted the government and multilateral agencies in exploring various market development and capacity building initiatives, both in India and abroad. He has helped in the exchanges for Demutualisation and has participated in various technical and standing committees constituted by Government of India and financial sector regulatory agencies. His contribution to the economic and financial work was visible through several publications in different journals on various issues.

- Director of Bank of Mauritius (development and supervision of Financial Markets & Internal Debt Management. Portfolio management of USD 6 Billion (Forex Reserve of the country)
- CEO of NRIFINTECH Financial Consultancy & Technology (Nomura)
- Provided consultancy services and training for Macro Economics, Financial Risk and Treasury Management, Financial Markets (Fixed Income, Currency, Commodity and Equity), market technology, risk technology & Business Strategy consulting
- Worked as Director in Deloitte & PwC
- Established a group (service line) called Markets, Derivatives and Treasury Operation under Deloitte. Focusing on Advisory on Treasury, Market Risk Management and Valuation of Structural Products and Derivatives
- Developed a Pan African commodity and Currency Derivative Exchange (Bourse Africa Ltd), which was a USD 100 M project
- Worked closely with South Africa, Mauritius, Botswana, Namibia, Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya stock exchanges, central bank, capital market regulators for development of commodity derivatives markets in Africa for Bourse Africa
- Member of the Reserve bank of India committee to set up NDS (Technology platform for trading Bonds).
- Assisted various corporates and Banks to set up treasury and risk management department.
- Worked with Standard & Poor (CRISIL), Regular participant for panel discussion on CNBC and
- Bloomberg UTV, Established and integrated Treasury and Risk Management functions for various corporates in India.
- Developed a Pan African commodity and currency Derivative Exchange (Bourse Africa Ltd), which was a USD 100 Mln project.
- Dr. Chiragra was the Consultant to the Governor of the Bank of Mauritius for Project Management.
