Mauritians Pay Tribute To Sir Anerood Jugnauth: The Father of Economic Miracle

This Saturday, June 5, the funeral of Sir Aneerood Jugnauth took place. The Mauritians mobilized in the several places where the procession was to make a symbolic stopover. The remains of Sir Anerood Jugnauth left his home, in La Caverne, Vacoas, around 10:30 am. A short moment of stagnation was left as a symbol of the house where the father of the economic miracle, who died Thursday evening at the age of 91 as a result of illness, has lived for sixty years alongside his wife, Lady Sarojini Jugnauth, whom he married in December 1957. Alongside the remains, we find Pravind Jugnauth, dressed in a white kurta, white tika on the forehead, who had, before that, participated in the funeral rites of his dad.

The cremation took place according to the Hindu funeral rites, either in the presence of the members of the Jugnauth family and this while respecting the sanitary rules. You could see that SAJ’s son, the Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, dressed in white, was very moved and sad. The atmosphere was very heavy there, before the arrival of the Special Mobile Force, which was carrying the body of the former Prime Minister and the former President of the Republic. We witnessed moments of great emotion for all the family members who attended the funeral of SAJ, who had made his last trip.

The emotion was palpable at the time. Shortly afterwards, that is to say after the funeral rites were over and the pyre caught fire, the head of government and the other members of the Jugnauth family left the Pamplemousses botanical garden, respecting the Hindu tradition. No doubt that despite the departure of this great man, SAJ, who was the architect of modern Mauritius and who transformed the quality of life of Mauritians especially for those at the bottom of the ladder, will be always in the hearts of Mauritians,
