All current mobile phone subscribers will have to re-register their SIM or eSIM cards from 31 October. On this date, the Information and Communication Technologies (Registrations of SIMs) Regulations 2023 will come into force. The re-registration of SIM Cards is one of the recommendations of the Drugs Inquiry, chaired by former judge Paul Lam Shang Leen in 2018. In the next few days, mobile phone operators will explain the registration mechanism. Subscribers have until 30 April 2024 to register.
SIM card re-registration is the process defined in the Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) Regulations 2023 where a service provider collects, verifies and records information of existing holders/users of SIM Cards. The process is explained on the ICTA web site: For a Mauritian citizen, he is required to provide the following:
- National ID card /Personal details of Passport; and
- Recent Utility bill or any other Proof of address.
The operator will also take a coloured photograph of the applicant and verify same against the National Identity Card photo or the photo from the passport as applicable.
