This was confirmed by the commerce minister, Soodesh Callichurn on 25th March. He asked consumers not to panic and panic buying as there is no shortage.
New markets
Indeed, the Minister has received the confirmation from three importers that not only will the stock be sufficient but that the supply will be continuous because the import is no longer under the dependence of Egypt and will be, for now, mainly from Brazil and Argentina. The Minister took the opportunity to explain that the rationing of two litres of oil per person had been imposed last Friday to avoid any excess, following rumours of a possible shortage.
Neither panic nor ‘Panick Buying’
During the press briefing at the SunTrust, the Minister made it clear: “We have taken the decision today to withdraw the limit of 2 litres of oil per person. Everything is back in order and we have made sure that there is a sufficient stock to avoid a shortage. I ask the population to act responsibly. Now that the restriction has been revoked, we ask people not to panic-buy.”
Reviewing the Consumer Pattern
On the other hand, Soodesh Callichurn has appealed to people to change their consumption pattern in the face of soaring prices and the possible repercussions of the global situation. “No one can know how long the crisis will last and what will happen with the war in Ukraine. The situation calls for a review of our Consumer Pattern”, he concluded.
