Covid 19 : New Claim For Regional Postponement In Rodrigues

Must Read

The Covid news is rather Rodrigues-led. While the 8000-case mark has been passed, with 2600 active cases in Rodrigues and 5358 cured cases in Rodrigues, and with 13 deaths since 26 January, the regional elections are, nevertheless, being held for this Sunday 27. The position of the Anti Covid Citoyen Movement in Rodrigues is audible.

The position of the Movement

The Rodrigues Anti Covid Citoyen Movement is calling for a new postponement of the regional elections. They believe that the pandemic situation is not favourable for such a call to civic responsibility, especially with voters who are contaminated by the invisible enemy, Omicron. Thus, this election will not count the participation of the 31,450 voters counted in the tenth district. Moreover, the movement believes that the rules will not be the same for everyone. The delegation which includes the Electoral Commissioner, Irfan Rahman, 6 Returning Officers and about forty officers and policemen including elements of the SSU and the SMF to secure the ballot boxes which will be transported on the same day, will not automatically quarantine themselves as they are leaving Mauritius for Rodrigues on Thursday to prepare for the elections which are due to take place on Sunday 27! the movement fears a huge risk of contamination for the delegation as well as for the voters in Rodrigues

71 cases more

In Mauritius, the rate is still fluctuating with 233 positive cases and 62 admissions on Wednesday 23 against 162 cases with 70 admissions on Tuesday. Two of the admissions are at the New ENT hospital and 60 in the 5 regional hospitals. It should be noted that 50 people were discharged from the regional hospitals and three from the ENT hospital. Vaccination is ongoing with 997,210 people for the first dose, 959,037 for the second and 470,252 for the third/booster dose.
