Commission Of Enquiry On Betamax: Telkraj Parbhunath Replaces Pushpawant Boodhun

Must Read

The commission of enquiry on Betamax is ready to work. In a statement issued today, the Office of the President of the Republic announced that Telkraj Parbhunath will be one of the assessors of Puisne Judge Carol Green-Jokhoo, who preside the commission, along with Kodados Mosafeer.

Telkraj Parbhunath will replace Dr Pushpawant Boodhun, who resigned shortly after the oath-taking ceremony. The commission of enquiry is responsible for shedding light on the circumstances that led to the granting and termination of the contract for the transport of petroleum products to the Betamax firm.

Betamax director Veekram Bhunjun has filed a Judicial Review application against the government’s move to set up a commission of enquiry into the 2009 allocation of the petroleum products transportation contract after the State Trading Corporation suffered a setback before the Privy Council in June.

It is again requesting that the commission’s work be put on hold pending a court decision. Betamax also considers it inevitable that there is a real risk that this commission of enquiry will look into issues and facts that have already been determined by the Singapore arbitration and the Privy Council. This would, according to Veekram Bhunjun’s legal team, amount to interference in the administration of justice, be illegal and in contempt of court.

The case is now before the Supreme Court.
