They do not approve of the government’s decision to bury the patients deceased from Covid at this cemetery. They prevented the officers of the Ministry of Health and health authorities from proceeding, and even started to throw stones at the processions. The police had to intervene.
The Bigarra cemetery is saturated and the ministry has decreed that the Bois Marchand cemetery will now be used for these special purposes. Thus, since Monday, this cemetery is the place where the bodies of the deceased from Covid will be buried.
Too close to the habitation zone
In their protests, the inhabitants stated that given the proximity of the cemetery to their houses, they fear for their health. The human blockade and the attack of stones have certainly pushed back the health authorities and employees of the cemetery but the intervention of the police calmed things down. The burial took place under the angry gazes of the inhabitants. They are demanding a meeting with the President of the District Council and the MPs of the Pamplemousses constituency.
The country is currently recording three deaths due to Covid-19. The Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday 8th September, the census of 204 active cases, including 3 admitted to the New ENT Hospital.
