According to Statistics Mauritius, the annual inflation rate in Mauritius rose to 7.4 percent in January of 2022 from 6.8 percent in the previous month. It was the highest rate since November 2008 as inflation quickened for transport (10.8 percent vs 7.2 percent in December); food & non-alcoholic beverages (10.2 percent vs 10 percent); alcoholic beverages & tobacco (9.9 percent vs 9.7 percent); health (8.4 percent vs 5.2 percent); and restaurants & hotels (4.6 percent vs 3.7 percent). On the other hand, inflation declined for housing & utilities (-0.5 percent vs 0.6 percent). On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 1.4 percent in January from 0.2 percent in the previous month.

The headline inflation rate is calculated by using the annual average method, that is, by comparing the average level of prices during a twelve-months period with the average level during the corresponding previous twelve-months period. The year-on-year inflation rate is calculated as the percentage change in the CPI for a given month with respect to the CPI for the corresponding month of the previous year.
