Air Mauritius: Dismissal Of 18 Pilots; Reason – No Aircraft

Must Read

This concerns 17 Mauritian men and the only Mauritian woman who were flying the A319 and A340. Air Mauritius, which has been under voluntary administration since April 2020, submitted a request to the Redundancy Board last Monday for the dismissal of 18 pilots. The reason being that the company no longer owns these two types of aircraft.

Mon-Choisy and Blue-Bay, its two A319-100s, and the Paille en Queue and Parakeet, the two A340s, are no longer part of the fleet. 12 were in charge of the A319s and 6 of the A340s. Our airline is in a dead end. At the last report at the end of June, Air Mauritius had debts of 6.1 billion rupees. The directors attached to Grant Thornton, Sattar Hajee Abdoula and Arvind Gokhool are working to save the company. However, for the targeted 18, there is no rescue plan yet, “There is no rescue scenario in which the Company would be able to safeguard or continue to employ the employees” says MK in a communiqué.

Under section 72 A of the Workers’ Rights Act, the directors of Air Mauritius have submitted this request to the Redundancy Board through their Senior Attorney, Rajesh Bucktowansing, which if accepted, should take effect on August 18. The directors are even working on another redundancy plan which concerns other employees who earn large salaries under this rescue plan, “that will need to be directly injected into the Company to make up for these losses” says the statement.
