In these difficult times, all means are good for some to make money. Thus, two individuals posed as two employees of the Ministry of Health who had come to do the Covid tests in order to break into the home of a couple of chicken farmers in Route La Marie, Vacoas. They left with a bag containing the sum of Rs 468 700, which was in the car of the couple. The investigation of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Vacoas with the assistance of the men of the Field Intelligence Office (FIO) of the Central Division was not long in tracing back to four individuals, who are suspected to be the authors of this most daring theft.
It was in the early evening of Thursday, November 12, that a 73-year-old man, owner of a chicken farm, went to the police station in Vacoas to report a case of theft, of which he was victim earlier. It was around 2:45 p.m. that day, he explained, and he and his wife, aged 67, were about to leave their home to go to Innodis, La Flora. Before he started his car, two people arrived in his yard. A man and a woman, and the latter was dressed in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). They introduced themselves as employees of the Department of Health who had come to do the PCR tests.
The 70-year-old said that he and his wife returned home with the woman. His wife left the bag containing money in her car. As soon as she stepped inside, she heard her daughter-in-law yelling “steal, steal”. They ran to the yard and saw the man shove their daughter-in-law and take the bag full of money before getting into a Nissan AK 13 and fleeing.
The 70-year-old man tried to chase the Nissan towards Railway Road, Glen Park, but lost it on the way to Trois Mamelles Road towards Bassin Road, Quatre Bornes. The car was found abandoned at Talipot Avenue, Quatre Bornes.
A field work carried out by the men of Inspector Goolab of the CID and those of the FIO led by sergeants Gopychand and Moothien, under the supervision of the police superintendent, Surnam, allowed in the early hours of this Saturday morning, November 13, to proceed with the arrest of Luchmana Ramnarain, 30 years old and her sister Manooska Gooljanee, 32 years old, residents of Bassin road, Quatre-Bornes as well as their accomplices, Kushal Ghoolam, 24 years old and his sister Krishni Ghoolam, 28 years old, both living in Bois Chéri, Moka. As for the Nissan AK 13, it belongs to Krisnhi Ghoolam, who is also the girlfriend of Luchmana Ramnarain.
The four suspects were brought before the Bail and Remand Court on Saturday, November 13. They were taken back to the police cell. They will appear at the Court of Curepipe again on Monday morning.
