A ten-member delegation of the Zambian Parliamentary Committee on National Guidance and Gender Matters, led by the Chairperson of the Committee and Member of Parliament, Mr Harry Kamboni, met the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr Sooroojdev Phokeer, this morning in Port-Louis.
The delegation is presently on a study visit to the National Assembly with the objectives of learning the best practices and sharing experiences on the legal and policy framework governing women and girls with disabilities in Mauritius and the opportunities available to them. The aim is to also learn about the strategies put in place by the Government of Mauritius to enhance the welfare of women and girls with disabilities.
In a statement after the meeting with the Speaker, Mr Harry Kamboni underlined that the purpose of the visit was to exchange knowledge on gender and national matters. He stressed that they wanted to learn and exchange with Mauritian authorities on the way to deal with men and women with disabilities, the challenges they face and how to improve their quality of life.
“Following our mission in Mauritius, we will report to, and advise, the Executive regarding elaboration of policies to better reach people and to help the Government respond adequately to these issues,” he said.
A working session with Members of the Parliamentary Gender Caucus followed the courtesy call.
The Zambian delegates will also be briefed on the Mauritian Parliamentary System and on business continuity of the Parliament of Mauritius amid the COVID-19 pandemic during a guided tour to the Parliament Chamber.
