Must Read

After nine years, a student at the University of Mauritius has broken her silence to denounce her father, a 58-year-old bricklayer, who had been sexually abusing her since the age of 12. On the evening of Tuesday August 22, the 21-year-old Vacoasienne went to the local police station to denounce the abuse her father was inflicting on her. In Cité Anoushka, Forest-Side, three children, aged 7, 12 and 14 respectively, were placed in the L’Oiseau Du Paradis shelter in Cap Malheureux after being taken into care by the Child Development Unit (CDU) of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare. The three brothers had been abused by their father. The father, a 41-year-old bricklayer, and the suspect, who was abusing his daughter, were arrested by police on Wednesday August 23.

It was a huge weight that this young woman lifted from her heart on the afternoon of Tuesday August 22. She dared to confront her suffering and denounce it to the police. In her complaint, made in the presence of a lawyer, the young woman recounted her childhood from the age of 12. In 2014, when she was in Form 1 at a state college, one afternoon in October at around 2 p.m., she was home alone with her father when he came into her room and grabbed her from behind before starting to grope her all over her body. The same day, her father forced her into the bathroom, where he touched her all over.

Her perverse father, she recounted, had continued his acts on several occasions until 2020. Between 2015 and 2020, her father had forced her to watch a pornographic film with him. He asked her to perform the same act on him as in the film, but she refused. She says she was forced to do despicable things. The young woman says she didn’t call for help because she was afraid of him.

Arrested in the early evening of Wednesday August 23, this mason from Vacoas was placed in a cell at the Vacoas detention center. On Thursday August 24, he was brought before the Curepipe court. He is facing a provisional charge of “causing child to be sexually abused”. He was subsequently kept in a cell.

Three brothers, aged 7, 12 and 14 respectively, have been in the L’Oiseau du Paradis shelter in Cap Malheureux since August 11. This after they were assaulted with a black electric wire by their father at around 3 p.m. on July 29 at their home in Cité Anoushka, Forest-Side. They had been hit on the right forearms, right feet, right ribs and right feet.

The same day, they were taken to the Quartier Militaire police station by an uncle who lives in Cité Vuillemin, Quartier Militaire. They were subsequently taken to Flacq hospital, where they were admitted to the Dr Bruno Cheong hospital in Flacq. Since their discharge from this hospital on August 11, they have been placed at L’Oiseau du Paradis.

A report of child abuse was made on the afternoon of Tuesday August 22 by a police officer from the Family Protection Brigade at Curepipe police station, in the presence of a Family Welfare Protection Officer from the Child Development Unit.

The father of the three children, who was arrested on the afternoon of Wednesday August 23, was placed in a cell at the Vacoas detention center. After his appearance at the Curepipe court on Thursday morning August 24, he was returned to the police cell.
