The Drug-Planting Argument Has Become A New Weapon, Says PM

Must Read

As usual, the Prime Minister was the last one to intervene on the 2023-2024 Budget on Tuesday. He spoke just before the Minister of Finance made his summing-up. Pravind Jugnauth reiterated his commitment to combating drug trafficking in Mauritius. He emphasised on the fact that since 2015, the police have made drug seizures estimated at Rs 15 Billion. There have been 22,000 arrests linked to these seizures, he said.

He responded to arguments of people arguing that the police is engaged in ‘drug-planting’. The drug-planting argument, he said, has become a new weapon to discredit police officers who, says Pravind Jugnauth, put their lives at risk to ensure that society is safe.

Referring to Xavier-Luc Duval’s Private Notice Question of Monday, which focused on the ADSU, the Prime Minister referred to Vimen Sabapati’s affidavit. The Prime Minister pointed out that Sabapati said in his affidavit that he is very close to Navin Ramgoolam.

Pravind Jugnauth insisted that Commissioner of Police acts independently and has said that he will not tolerate any black sheep within the police force.
