Suspect Arrested For Car Theft

A joint operation led by police officers of the Metropolitan Police of the North Division and those of the South Division has allowed this Monday, November 01 to make the arrest of an individual concerning a case of car theft in Rose-Belle. The stolen Hyundai car was spotted in the area of Riche-Terre before being arrested with two occupants, including a homeless man aged 32 years, Mohammad Ishaaq Beekaree and a car washer living in the area Le Hochet, Terre-Rouge. The latter was later released.

The theft of this dark green Hyundai was reported in the parking lot of the Jawaharlall Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle on Monday, October 25. On Monday, November 01, Sergeant Noordally’s men from the Metropolitan Police’s Field Intelligence Office (FIO) of the North Division, under the supervision of Inspector Louis, set up an operation with their colleagues from the FIO of the South Division as well as the police officers of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of this same division. This car had been spotted by surveillance cameras while driving on Nicolay Road, St. Croix and Magon Street, Plaine-Verte.

A fieldwork was initiated to find out the identity of the alleged thief of this car on November 01 after the team of police officers obtained the identity of the person who was with the driver on Sunday, October 31. The latter, a 34 year old peddler and resident of Plaine-Verte, was questioned at length. He had to give the name of the person who was driving the car as Ishaaq Beekaree, a former resident of the Camp-Yoloff area.

Sergeant Noordally of the FIO had to deploy all his men on the ground to locate this suspect. With the assistance of the Rose-Belle CID police officers led by Inspector Sookun, the stolen car was spotted in the Riche-Terre area before being intercepted. Ishaaq Beekaree, who attempted to flee the scene, was quickly overpowered and arrested. The car washer was also arrested before being released after questioning.

Ishaaq Beekaree was brought before the Bail and Remand Court in Port-Louis on Tuesday, November 2, and was returned to the police cell. This Wednesday, November 3, he will appear again before the court in Mahebourg.
