Roche-Bois: Hostile Crowd Aborts Arrest

A team from the Metropolitan Police’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Northern Division had to retreat in front of a hostile crowd in Roche-Bois on Friday morning, December 24. They had gone there to arrest Andy Selmour, who was involved in a violent robbery. The suspect first bit a police officer and then threatened the other officers with a sword given to him by his girlfriend. As the suspect fled, a hostile crowd confronted the police.

It was around 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 24, that four CID police officers went to Pierre Victor Albert Street in Roche-Bois, based on certain information. Andy Selmour who was sitting in front of his house was informed of the reason for this visit. At this point, the suspect became violent and began to yell, “pa pou bon si arett mwa”. One of the police officers grabbed him from behind and Andy Selmour began to struggle with other officers to resist arrest.

Andy Selmour is accused of having assaulted a driver living in Pailles, on Nicolas Baudin Street in Roche-Bois, on the morning of Tuesday, December 21. The latter was in the company of his assistant-driver. They are both the region of Pailles. The driver was robbed of his wallet before his assailant took the sum of Rs 5 000. Another individual pushed him from behind and he ended up on the ground. His assistant driver was wounded in the stomach with a box cutter during this scuffle.  He went to the health center of Pailles to be treated.

The suspect then asked his concubine to bring a sword. At the same time he was to bite one of the policemen on the right thumb. The latter had no choice but to release him. At the same time his concubine obstructed his arrest by handing over the sword.  Andy Selmour then fled. In front of a hostile crowd, the police had no choice but to retreat and let the man and his concubine go.

The police officer bitten on the thumb had to go to the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis to be treated.
