Morocco: Rayan Pronounced Dead Following Painstaking Rescue Mission

Moroccan authorities announced child’s death shortly after rescue workers extracted him from a well. Rayan Aourram, a five-year-old boy who captivated the world, was pronounced dead Saturday night.

Rescue teams managed to reach 5-year-old Rayan early Saturday afternoon. After accidentally falling into a deep well, 5-year-old Rayan was trapped for nearly five days before his death was announced

Engaged in a race against time, Moroccan rescuers entered Saturday afternoon in the tunnel that leads to the pocket where Rayan was. They found him on Saturday evening. But the five-year-old, who fell into a deep well five days ago, is dead.

The little boy died before rescuers were able to reach him and retrieve his body, two government officials said.

Moroccan authorities announced the death just before 10pm local time, shortly after rescue workers were able to extract him out of the well where he fell five days ago. The painstaking operation to reach Rayan was broadcast around the world.

Rescuers had been working hard to try to save the five-year-old boy who has been trapped in a deep well in a northern Moroccan village since Tuesday afternoon. On saturday evening, Moroccan rescuers were finally able to enter the tunnel that lead to the pocket where the child was and extracted him just before 10 pm. The Royal Cabinet has, unfortunately, announced his death in a statement sent in the evening.
