Although trade deficit amounted to Rs. 11.6 billion in October, exports to South Africa continue to increase. Out of the Rs. 6.1 billion exported by Mauritius to the world, Rs. 1 billion was destined to South Africa alone. Total exports to South Africa represented 17.6% of Mauritian exports, making South Africa Mauritius’s top export destination.

Our top three export destinations in October were South Africa (17.6%), the United Kingdom (8.7%), and Madagascar (7.9%). Imports were mainly from China (21.7%), India (16.5%), and United Arab Emirates (9.7%).

Export Oriented Mauritian companies have continued to lose grip on the European market since 2015 and turned almost exclusively to South Africa 2020 with success.

Exports to France have decreased from Rs. 654 million in September 2021 to Rs. 480 million in October. Exports to Great Britain have fallen from Rs. 604 million in September 2021 to Rs. 539 million in October 2021.

Traditional products, namely textile, and sugar make up most of our total exports to South Africa.
