In A Few Minutes, Big Accumulation Of Water In Port-Louis

Must Read

Once again, Mother Nature has showered the island with heavy rainfalls causing accumulations of water in some places.  As a result, a heavy rain warning was issued for the capital by the Vacoas weather station at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9 and was valid until 6 p.m.

As mentioned, these heavy rains caused water accumulations in various areas in Port-Louis. The National Emergency Operations Command (NEOC) stated, in a statement issued this afternoon, that they were monitoring the situation closely and asked the public and students to follow specific precautionary measures.

The public was also advised to contact the authorities in case of emergencies and the public was expected to follow the instructions given by the authorities concerned and to respect the protocols established by the authorities in the context of COVID-19.

The Caudan tunnel in Port Louis was closed for safety reasons; a decision taken by the Police Commissioner, Anil Kumar Dip in consultation with his team, as explained by the Inspector Shiva Coothen.

As a result of this heavy rainfall, accumulations of water have been noted at the Caudan roundabout; the Ruisseau du Pouce, near the New Supreme Court, at the corner of Edith Cavell and Desroches streets. Port-Louis was quickly submerged by an avalanche of muddy water, stirring up the concern of the users.

The alleys of the capital were flooded just at the release time of the students’ after school hours. The students had trouble getting around as the sidewalks were slippery and flooded. Soaked to the bone, students tried to make their way to safety places. At the crossroads of Dauphine and La Corderie streets as well as Sir Virgil Naz street, it was noted that the pipes were blocked and the streets were not usable.

The weather has calmed down for now.
