Now the multi-billionaire, Elon Musk has come under fire for saying that the company might charge users with the coveted blue tick $20 for a month. He is now considering slashing the subscription to $8 per month.
The Verge, an American news website, reported that Musk had planned to raise the price of the Twitter Blue subscription from $5 to $20. The subscription is the sole way to maintain a verified-user status.
Currently, the company charges $5 for using the Twitter Blue subscription. However, The Verge reported about the cost that the company is considering to charge from its users. According to this report, the executives are considering charging $20 per month for the Twitter Blue subscription, or users with already checked accounts would lose that status if they don’t pay the subscription. The users will have 90 days to fulfill the subscription before losing the blue checkmark. This measure will be implemented from November 7.
The blue checkmark was created for users to know about the accounts which qualified as “notable, authentic, and active”. These Twitter accounts include accounts of government officials, people representing popular brands, news organizations and journalists, activists, celebrities, and athletes.
In 2021, there were only 360,000 accounts, or 0.2% of Twitter’s verified monetized activities. As Twitter is now under Elon Musk’s leadership, there is a requirement that it could provide revenue to the company.
Twitter Blue is a subscription service that provides users with perks such as undoing a tweet, reading news ad-free, editing a published tweet, organizing bookmarks into folders, pin conversations in DMs, and posting 10-minute-long videos. The service cost has increased from $3 a month in 2021 to $5 a month in October.
It is still not clear whether all Twitter Blue subscriptions will be marked with the coveted blue check. Twitter executives can make any decision on the spur of the moment.
