Rs 7 Million Worth Of Zamal Seized At Laventure

A police operation set up by elements of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) on the evening of Friday June 9 in the village of Laventure, Flacq, resulted in the seizure of 6405.52 grams of cannabis, known as zamal, on Saturday morning June 10. The drug was seized from the cab of a parking truck.  The market value of the drugs, which were shipped from Reunion Island, is estimated at Rs 7,686,624.   In the absence of the truck owner, his wife, Christina Caramuth, 30, was taken into custody. The owner, Ibrahim Nur-Ul-Din Caramuth, 48, is being actively sought by Adsu.

It was on the basis of information that a large quantity of zamal was concealed in the cab of a truck that police officers from Adsu de Flacq arrived in Laventure. As reported, the truck was parked on a vacant lot. A surveillance operation was set up until very late in the evening of Friday June 9. When the owner failed to show up, a team of police officers went to his home, while surveillance was carried out around his truck.

Ibrahim Caramuth remained unreachable. Early on the morning of Saturday June 10, in the presence of his wife, Adsu police officers forced open the lock on his truck. They found six black plastic bags filled with zamal. His wife was confronted with these exhibits, to which she had to declare, “mo pa konn nanien dan sa zaffer la, li mem pour kapav explike”. While waiting for her husband to be found to give his version, Christina Caramuth, née Thomas, was arrested and taken into custody.
