Must Read

Press conference of Ministers Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo, Bobby Hurreeram and Maneesh Gobin at the Sun Trust Building in Port-Louis on Saturday, October 29, 2022. The various social measures introduced since the MSM came to power; the tensions between the different parties of the Opposition; the demonstration were among the topics discussed. Another important topic was the two important bills, the Dangerous Drugs Amendment Bill and the Law Practioners Amendment Bill, which will soon be enacted…

“Currently, the MSM is the only party on the political spectrum with a fully functioning structure,” said government spokesman and Public Infrastructure Minister Bobby Hurreeram.

In the same vein, the government spokesman urges the population to make their own judgement about what is being reported in some newspapers and radios.

For his part, MSM Secretary General Maneesh Gobin, who is also Attorney General, dwelt on the new bill that the government intends to implement with the Law Practitioners Amendments Bills.

Maneesh Gobin also dwelt on the Dangerous Drugs Amendment Bill, another bill that will soon be enacted. “This new bill is a great step forward for the country. The objective is to decriminalize medical cannabis and drug use in Mauritius. The principle with this law is to no longer prosecute those who have been caught for possession of drugs for their own use,” he said. The latter points out that the use of medical cannabis will be strictly controlled by doctors.

For her part, the Minister of Social Security, Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo believes that it is since the MSM is in charge of the country that the living conditions of Mauritians have improved. “Social issues remain the priority of Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth and the MSM. As you have seen, since our election in 2014 and in 2019, we have come up with several measures to improve the quality of life of our elderly and disabled people, among others. Social benefits have increased from Rs 3,623 under the PTr regime to Rs 10,000 under our government,” she said.

Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo also listed social measures introduced by the current government to support the population. She cited among others the introduction of the minimum wage; an allowance of Rs 1000 to some 265,000 employees and self-employed; a social allowance for those with disabilities of 40% to 59%; a social allowance for families whose income threshold is below Rs 10,500 per month. “As long as the MSM is in power, we will continue to develop and modernize the country. We will always make social issues our priority,” concluded the Minister.
